  • When loaded, visually check the load distribution. Is it safe to haul? Inspect the material inside the pan. Does it contain hazardous waste, mud, or other non-polymer material?
  • Inspect the hook assembly. Look for spreading on deadlifts, cracks/rust/bent areas in the hook area.
  • Walk down the driver’s side of the container. Check the container side walls for holes, and rust through areas that debris could exit the container while in transit.
  • Check the door. It should always be latched tightly.
    • Check the latch assembly for damage.
    • Check the safety chain for damage.
    • Check the hinges for cracked welds, rust through areas, bent hinges, missing hinges and/or broken hinges.
  • Check the door seal area. Containers should not have excessive water coming out if the door is secured properly.
  • Walk up the passenger side of the container and check for damages.

Hydraulic Oil Levels: The driver must always check the hydraulic oil level before beginning work, it is located on the driver’s side below the pan.

In the event the container fails any of the above criteria, your supervisor should be notified immediately. In the event the container needs minor repair but is still safe to use, the dispatcher/supervisor will make the decision whether to return the container to the yard for immediate repair or to continue to use the container pending repairs later.

  • Expandable foam is only approved as a temporary fix for field seal failures. Failure to report a failed seal like the one pictured below will be considered a procedure failure.

If the container is not able to be repaired or has too major of damages to be in service then this container is considered Out of Service. Once a container is determined to be Out of Service, an “OUT OF SERVICE” tag must be placed on the hook assembly with your name and date.
