Timing

A common misconception regarding fire extinguishers is how long they last. Depending on size, fire extinguishers are designed to last for a specific amount of time.

For example, a 2 1/2 pound extinguisher lasts about 7 seconds, a 5 pound extinguisher around 14 seconds, and a 10 pound extinguisher 22-26 seconds.

If the fire doesn’t respond to the extinguishing agent, don’t look for another extinguisher to try again. Instead evacuate immediately.
