Working Around NORM

  • Direct skin contact with radioactive scale and solids should be avoided whenever possible.
  • Eating, drinking, smoking and chewing should not be allowed in the work area where work is being performed on contaminated equipment or soil.
  • Personnel should thoroughly wash their hands and face after working with contaminated equipment, and before eating, drinking, dipping, chewing, or even smoking.
  • All cuts and abrasions effectively dressed.
  • Openings on contaminated equipment will be sealed or wrapped in plastic.
  • When personnel go in the general area where work is being performed, a NORM/ MSHA/ HEPA approved dust mask or cartridge type respirator, properly fitted, shall be worn.
  • Suitable coveralls, eye protection, and rubber or latex gloves will be worn.
  • Contaminated materials will be sealed in D.O.T. 17-H steel containment drums with stickers indicating the name of the owner, drum number and control number.

On Completion of Work

  • Complete NORM form.
  • Send sample to laboratory for analysis.
  • Decontaminate every one who leaves site.
  • Take down barriers etc.
  • Check site for contamination
