SEMS Principal Objectives

• Reduce the negative consequences of human error and poor organization in the offshore industry
• Encourage performance based operating practices
• Promote continuous improvement in the offshore industry’s environmental records and documentation
• Collaborate with industry in efforts that promote the public interests of offshore worker safety and environmental protection

Offshore oil and gas industry and the US government work together to reduce accidents:

• The Federal government called for the adoption of the Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) approach
• This approach requires companies to document each step of their processes and the hazards that could affect workers
• This information should be communicated to the workers, so they are aware of the potential hazards
