Cold Weather-Public Warnings

Winter Storm Watch

Issued when there is a potential for significant and hazardous weather withing 48 hours.  Does NOT mean that it will occur only possible.  Issued when:

  • 5 inches or more of hazardous weather in a 12hr period and/or
  • Enough ice accumulation to cause damage to trees or powerlines and/or
  • A life threatening or damaging combination of snow  with/without ice accumulation with wind

Winter Weather Advisory

Issued for any amount of freezing rain, or when 2 to 4 inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain) is expected to cause a significant inconvenience but not serious enough to warrant a warning

Winter Storm Warning

Issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent

Freeze Watch/Warning

Issued when there is a potential for significant widespread
freezing temperatures within 24-48 hrs.

 

Wind Chill Advisory

Issued when wind chills of -5 Fahrenheit to -19 Fahrenheit are expected

Wind Chill Warning

Issued when wind chills of -20 Fahrenheit or lower
