In this course we will cover the health hazards that surround Nitrogen and other topics that are necessary for your safety in the workplace when handling and/or dealing with nitrogen. Nitrogen is a naturally occurring element that is essential for growth and reproduction in both plants and animals. It is found in amino acids that make up proteins, in nucleic acids, that comprise the hereditary material and life's blueprint for all cells, and in many other organic and inorganic compounds. Nitrogen makes up 78% of our atmosphere and we breathe it in every day with no risk to our health and safety. However, given the correct circumstances, nitrogen can become very volatile and pose a real threat of asphyxiation.
