Definitions

Advisory – Official information issued by tropical cyclone warning centers describing all tropical cyclone watches and warnings in effect along with the details of tropical cyclone locations, intensity and movement, and precautions that should be taken. Advisories are also issued to describe: (a) tropical cyclones prior to issuance of watches and warnings and (b) subtropical cyclones.

Asset – For the purposes of this instruction, an asset would be a building, equipment, materials or data.

AEC – Atlantic East Coast

Emergency Hotline – U.S. Gulf Coast – x-xxx-xxx-xxxx

CERT – Emergency Response Team; individual teams at each location / site

CERT Leader – Emergency Response Team Leader

Gale Warning – A warning of 1-minute sustained surface winds in the range 34 kt (39 mph or 63 km/hr) to 47 kt (54 mph or 87 km/hr) inclusive, either predicted or occurring and not directly associated with tropical cyclones.

GOM – Gulf of Mexico

HSE – Health, Safety and Environment

Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with pronounced rotary circulation and sustained wind speeds of 74 mph or more.

Kts – Knots

Landfall – The intersection of the surface center of a tropical cyclone with a coastline. Because the strongest winds in a tropical cyclone are not located precisely at the center, it is possible for a cyclone’s strongest winds to be experienced over land even if landfall does not occur. Similarly, it is possible for a tropical cyclone to make landfall and have its strongest winds remain over the water. Compare direct hit, indirect hit, and strike.

Mobilization – For the purposes of this instruction, mobilization refers to the movement of personnel and/or assets to and from the Emergency Response Command Center.

Nm – Nautical miles

NOAA – National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Recovery Team – A pre-selected team identified by the ERT; that will return to a worksite that has been affected and systematically identify and implement the needed requirements to return the worksite to full operations.

Remote Site – Predetermined location out of the general area of the Houston offices from which a temporary command center can be used by the EC. (To be determined if necessary)

Resources – Personnel and major items of equipment, supplies, and facilities available or
potentially available for assignment during pre and/or post incident operations.

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale – A 1-5 Category rating based on the hurricane’s present intensity. This is used to give an estimate of the potential property damage and flooding expected from a hurricane landfall.

Mass communication system WhatsApp (a communication service used to communicate to all employees during emergency situations)

Tropical Depression – A rotary circulation at the surface of the water with sustained wind speeds of 33 kts or 38 mph or less.

Tropical Disturbance – A moving area of thunderstorms of tropical origin that maintains its identity for 24 hours or more. Generally 100 to 300 nm in diameter.

Tropical Storm – Distinct rotary circulation with sustained wind speed ranges from 34 kts or 39 mph to 63 kts or 73 mph. At this point the storm is given a name.

Tropical Storm Warning – A warning that sustained winds within the range of 34 to 63 kts or 39 to 73 mph associated with a tropical cyclone are expected in a specified coastal area within 24 hours or less.

Tropical Storm Watch – An announcement for specific coastal areas that tropical storm conditions are possible within 36 hours.
