HAZCOM -Hazardous Communication

The purpose of the HAZCOM program is to ensure that employees know chemical hazards in the workplace so that they may:

  • Make an informed decision,
  • Take steps to protect themselves, and
  • Observe symptoms of toxicity.

HAZCOM Definition:

  • A hazard is a situation which poses a level of threat to life, health, property or environment.
  • Most hazards are dormant or potential, with only a theoretical risk of harm.  However, once a hazard becomes ‘active’, it can create an emergency situation.
  • HazCom concerns any hazardous material known to be present in the workplace where personnel may be exposed under normal conditions or in a foreseeable emergency.
